Description et habitat

  • Plante grasse aquatique vivace, dicotylédone, glabre, charnue, rampante, ne supportant pas le gel, connue des aquariophiles
  • Feuilles succulentes, épaisses, opposées ; tige fine et glabre, verte.
  • Racine fine, rêche, petite et ramifiée. Jaune-crème.
  • Fleurs petites et blanches, axillaires, solitaires, possèdant cinq pétales aux nervures légèrement violacées.
  • Fruit: capsule ovoïde glabre avec plusieurs graines
  • Le genre Bacopa comprend plus de 100 espèces de plantes aquatiques des régions chaudes du monde, souvent considérées comme de mauvaises herbes (des rizières par exemple)
    • Elle pourrait être utilisée dans la phytoépuration des eaux (résistance à certains polluants par production de phytochélateurs, par exemple au cadmium) [1]
  • Originaire des régions chaudes et humides de la zone tropicale, Inde, Népal, Sri Lanka, Chine, Taiwan, Vietnam, sud des États-Unis

Histoire et tradition

  • Plante de la pharmacopée ayurvédique (retrouvée dans le Charaka Samhita), recommandée pour traiter le système nerveux central, les états nerveux, l'anxiété, les troubles de l'attention, les convulsions; mais aussi contre les problèmes de rétention d’eau, les bronchites, les douleurs articulaires.
    • Les remèdes du système nerveux central sont souvent nommés "Brahmi" en référence à Brahma, Dieu créateur du panthéon hindou, c'est aussi le cas de Centella asiatica
  • En Inde, elle est utilisée pour clarifier l’esprit pendant la méditation

Propriétés de la plante

  • Antioxydant, anti-stress [5], adaptogène [6]
  • Antioxydant au niveau cérébral, augmente les concentrations en superoxyde dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) et glutathion peroxydase (GPX) dans les structures sous-corticales et l’hippocampe (extrait titré à 82% en bacoside A) [7]
  • Accroît la production de monoxyde d'azote NO
  • Inhibe la production de cytokines pro-inflammatoires dans le cerveau (bacoside A) [8]
  • Réduit la production de glutamate au niveau cérébral [9] et accroît celle de GABA (acide gamma-aminobutyrique) dans diverses zones cérébrales, augmente le niveau de sérotonine
  • Améliore les facultés cognitives et la mémoire [10] chez des jeunes gens en bonne santé, mais aussi dans les troubles de déficit de l'attention avec hyperactivité, et chez les personnes en dysfonction intellectuelle [11], améliore la performance cognitive chez les sujets âgés (300 mg d'extrait par jour) [12]
  • Amélioration des capacités cognitives chez l’homme en bonne santé après une administration d’extrait de Bacopa monnieri pendant 90 jours [13], l’amélioration se manifeste même après une seule prise [14]
  • Amélioration des facultés cognitives et de l’attention [15], [16]
  • Améliore la mémoire à court et à long terme [17], améliore l'activité anti-oxydante dans le cortex cérébral et l'hippocampe
  • Augmente la plasticité cérébrale, stimule la croissance dendritique neuronale [18]
  • Amélioration de l’efficacité synaptique associée à l'apprentissage, renforcement des synapses hippocampiques, qui jouent un rôle essentiel dans l'apprentissage et la formation de la mémoire [19]

  • Troubles de la mémoire : une méta-analyse montre une amélioration significative de la cognition, de l’attention et de la vitesse de traitement des informations par l’usage d’un extrait standardisé de Bacopa [31]

  • Maladie de Parkinson
  • Maladies inflammatoires systémiques et cérébrales chroniques en lien avec le système immunitaire inné [37]

Mode d'action connu ou présumé

  • Un extrait standardisé de Bacopa est capable d’inhiber les enzymes Catéchol-O-méthyl transférase (COMT), Prolyl endopeptidase (PEP) et Poly (ADP-ribose) polymérase (PARP), associés aux troubles de la mémoire et de l'apprentissage [38]

  • Éviter chez les femmes enceintes et allaitantes
  • Aucune toxicité, ni aiguë ni chronique, n'a été observée chez le rat [39]
  • Interactions pharmacologiques constatées en clinique avec les neuroleptiques, association à éviter (augmentation des effets de la phénothiazine, neuroleptique de première génération)
  • Éviter en cas d'hyperthyroïdie
